Gift circles were started by some dude in the US a few years ago. I can't remember the details exactly, though gift economies in various forms have been continually practiced by humans for as long as we've been around.
The idea has spread to Victoria and started here a few months ago with a smattering of folks meeting monthly and now there are growing dozens meeting every two weeks!
The concept is quite simple -- there are two basic rounds. In the first, everyone mentions something that they have to offer. In the next round, each person asks for something that they want or need. These somethings could be any object or any service, and you can find examples are below. After every offer/need, if anyone would like to take something or help with something, they simply have to speak up. Details can be arranged informally at the end. If there is no one in the group who can directly help with meeting a need, then the group brainstorms other ways to help.
The idea is that all the participants come with something to give and something to ask for, but transactions are not necessarily direct trades (and most often aren't) -- you might give something to one person, get nothing in return from them, but get something from another person, to whom you don't give anything. At least not that week!
Some offers & needs that I have seen given and fulfilled in the few circles I've been at:
- laptop & desktop computers, computer repair
- electrical work
- gardening help
- seeds, space in a greenhouse, garden space
- furniture, appliances, clothes, books, jewelry
- bicycle trailer, bicycle repair, even just plain bicycles
- the use of a living room for community meetings
- car and truck rides
