RESKILLING

Welcome to the Transition Victoria RESKILLING group. The Reskilling Group is working to build a culture that will have the skills and tools necessary to thrive in a future with less fossil fuels.

Facilitator: K!EF contact him by email at kiefer.jens@gmail.com

- currently contemplating how skill sharing through lack of tool & workshop space could be improved.

Meet and Mend

Since Denise Dunn's passing, a number of other folks have indicated interest in hosting Meet and Mend gatherings. Watch the Events section for future Meet and Mends.

We are exploring the big question of:

Yeah, the pirate thing did occur to me!

It takes weeks to sail to California. Unless you are hauling cargo, the only advantage of sailing over cycling is if things collapse so far that civil order disappears and the roads are full of robbers. But in that grim case, the seas will be full of pirates, after your boat if nothing else.

Sailing, however, opens many other possibilities here on an island on a furrowed coast - see Dmitir Orlov's current post on Energy Bulletin

I wonder if I should learn how to sail, so that I can still go visit my sister in California after oil peaks. I was hoping for High Speed Rail, but it doesn't look like it will happen soon. :(

Anybody know how long it would take by boat?

Thanks for this link Jackie. The two moving sidewalks metaphor speaks to me and wise words about:
"Job retraining?
Select an industry which is likely to endure
Peoples’ “core needs” rather than luxury items (bottom of the Maslow pyramid)
Industries (or subcategories of those industries) that have low energy inputs and low resource demands;
Locally sourced rather than international and dependent upon globalization.
Expect survival-level cash flow rather than replacement of the salaries of the last decade.
Expect to put in place all of the cash-conservation measures listed in bullet #2 of this series.
Perhaps try out new skills via Time banking or LETS. (#5 of this series). Build your resume through barter-funded work. Meanwhile the barter credits can help ease your living expenses while you are out of U.S. dollar-generating work."

Thought some of you might enjoy this ... inspired by a Women's Weaving group in Guatemala:

Denise, et. al:
Yes, Shannon Hayes's words are compelling ones, to be sure! I will be giving a lecture on this subject as part of the Wayward School line-up... I'm no expert, but I'm certainly keen to get more people talking about it!  (sorry about late reply, only just now seeing your comment Denise).

REskillers, if you want to be on the roster of potential teachers for the March/April program, here's a link to the form:

Hi Heather

Are you aware of the book Radical Homemakers?  It's in the public library - good info. about (US) families refusing to join the consumer economy and doing quite well on it.
