It’s great to see you want to get involved! We are happy to welcome you to our growing community.
By getting involved you’re taking a very positive step. The issues of peak oil and climate change can seem overwhelming at times and action is the healthiest response you can make, for yourself and those you care about. At Transition Victoria, we believe that together we can create a positive post-carbon future, one that is in fact preferable.
Here is how we recommend you proceed:
Join Transition Victoria: in the upper right hand corner of this site you’ll see a “Sign Up” link. Click on that link and fill in the form. Now you will be able to join working groups, RSVP for events and receive our monthly newsletter.
Join A Working Group: Working Groups are where the action is. The Transition movement is about doing something to prepare for a future with less energy. Every Working Group meets regularly with the intention of addressing some specific issue related to the Transition process. Click on the “Groups” tab to see a list. To get started, find one that resonates with you and go ahead and click the “Join …” button. You’ll now be included in any communications sent out to that group’s members.
By the way, its perfectly fine to join any group and attend a meeting as a guest just to check it out.
You may post Events and Photos related to The Great Turning under their respective tabs. Working group meetings are posted under "Events".
RSVP For An Event: You're almost there! Click on the “Events” tab and scroll down to see a complete list of all events. There may be an upcoming meeting of the Working Group you joined, an event related to one of our projects, or other events such as a film screening or our regular “Transition Café” social. Find one that interests you and click the “Will Attend” choice in the RSVP box. Note that not all events include an RSVP box. Either way, as Woody Allen said, “Eighty percent of success is showing up!”
Before you attend an event, we recommend you read the Working Groups Primer posted on our site. It’s a short document that will familiarize you with our core principles, individual responsibilities, how we make decisions, etc. You’ll find it under the Resources tab.
You may also be interested in participating in one of our projects. Under the Projects tab you’ll see a drop-down list of projects. If you see one that interests you, feel free to send a message to the coordinator. You’ll see a link to do this right under the project title on the project page.
Transition Victoria also facilitates Home Groups. These are small groups of around a half dozen people who meet regularly to support one another through the transition process. The focus and format of these meetings is up to the members of each Home Group. Once a particular Home Group is comfortable with the number of people in their group, a new Home Group will be initiated. For more information about Home Groups contact Edward Butterworth at edwardat60@yahoo.ca
